On Track for Transformation: The San Francisco Railyards

The San Francisco Railyards is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the 4th and King Caltrain yards into a dynamic, transit-oriented neighborhood with jobs, housing, and vibrant public spaces. A public-private collaboration between Caltrain and Prologis, in coordination with the City and County of San Francisco, the 20-acre site will be centered on a modernized Caltrain station with retail and amenities, and include entitlement for up to 7–8 million square feet of mixed-use development, including thousands of homes, as well as hotel, office, life science, and retail uses.

In conjunction with this project, the Transbay Joint Powers Authority will construct a new, modern, and accessible train station beneath Townsend Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets as part of The Portal. This transformational investment will deliver seamless Caltrain and California High-Speed Rail service into the heart of downtown San Francisco, freeing up space for development at the railyards and connecting the site to one of the densest concentrations of transit on the West Coast with 11 transit systems in the multimodal, six-level Salesforce Transit Center.

Nadine Fogarty of Caltrain, Genevieve Cadwalader of Prologis, and LAI members Leigh Lutenski of the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development and Adam Van de Water of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA) will join us to discuss the plans, partnerships, and projects shaping the future of the San Francisco Railyards.
